What Is Sperm Motility?

Sperm motility is the measure of the sperm movement. If determines how freely can the sperm move. It is the movement of the cell and the number of active cells in the sperms.

What Is The Normal Sperm Motility Range?

The movement of the sperm is calculated from the range of 0-4 with the score more than 3 being a good score. The amount of active cells are often measured in percentage with the amount of active cells being above 50% is considered the least and anything more than 50 % is good.

How Does Low Sperms Motility Affect The Fertility?

Motility of the sperm determines the ability of the sperm to reach the eggs through the fallopian tubes and form the embryo and survive in the woman’s terus. The more the motility, more are the chances of the sperm to survive.

What Are The Reasons For Low Motility Rate?

  •  Alcoholism, smoking, consuming tobacco or other drugs.
  •  Severe mumps infection after puberty
  •  Incorrect medication that lead to a side effect.
  •  Stress and a bad lifestyle
  •  Hormonal imbalance
  • Exposure radiation, poisonous chemicals or harmful gases.
  • Blockages caused due to infections in the penis

How To Identify Infertility Due To Low Motility Rate?

The issues with sperm come to light only when the couple is unable to conceive despite several attempts. The quality of the sperm can be examined using:

  • Semen analysis: A test where the semen is tested for its sperm content.
  • Blood test: To check if there are any infections.
  • Checking for blockages, allergies or restrictions in the penis
  • Physically examining the penis, scrotum, and prostate.
  • Externally stimulating the sperm motility using medication and injectables.
  • Blood test: To check if there are any infections.
  • Taking medicines that will restore the hormonal imbalance.
  • Regular exercise and a balanced diet and food supplements
  • Aversion from addictions
  • If the motility rate of the sperm is very low, a sperm donor can be appointed and assisted pregnancy methods like low-cost IVF treatment can be used.
